INTRODUCTION Acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) is a serious life-threatening neurological disease. The estimated incidence is 2-5 per 100.000 people per year in developed countries but may be up to ten times higher in developing countries. Despite advances in active immunization, antibiotic therapy and critical care resources, the mortality rate of ABM remains unacceptably high, ranging between 10% and 30%. Moreover, survivors may suffer severe disability such as hearing loss, seizures, cognitive and behavioural changes and sensorimotor impairment (1).
